Festival & Outdoor Lighting

Main-stage and outdoor lighting that reads at scale and turns around fast between acts.

What it covers

Festivals are a different discipline to a headline tour. You are usually working on someone else's rig, with a changeover measured in minutes and a crew you met an hour ago.

  • Working quickly and cleanly on a shared house rig
  • Building a set of looks that survive a fast changeover
  • Designing for daylight, dusk and full dark in the same day
  • Liaising with the house LD and stage management
  • Specials and signature moments that still land at distance

Reading at scale

Outdoors, subtlety disappears. Low-level states that look considered in a theatre vanish against a grey sky or a video wall. Festival looks need contrast, strong back light and enough saturation to hold up on a big screen and on a phone camera in row thirty.

The changeover

The practical craft is preparation: a show file that loads clean, palettes referenced to the house rig, and a plan for what gets cut first if the changeover runs late. A calm handover with the house team is worth more than any extra fixture.
