What it covers
A touring show has to look the same on night forty as it did on night one, in a room nobody has seen before. That means the design has to be robust, properly documented and quick to rig — not just beautiful in one venue.
- Concept and look development with the director, MD or producer
- Light plot and paperwork — plan, instrument schedule, patch, colour and gobo lists
- Cue synopsis and plotting sessions
- Programming and operation, or a clean handover to a house operator
- Adaptation for venues of different sizes, trim heights and house rigs
How it works
- Brief. Script or running order, references, venue list and budget.
- Design. Look development, then a plot and paperwork the crew can rig from.
- Plot. Cue-by-cue build, ideally with time in the room before tech.
- Tech and dress. Refining levels, timings and transitions against the performance.
- Tour. A show file and paperwork that travel, and scale up or down sensibly.

Most touring productions meet a different rig every week. The practical answer is a design built in layers — a core look that always works, plus the extras that get added when the venue and the get-in time allow. Documented properly, so a local crew can rig it without a phone call.
